CHAPTER 22
Thelma left a note on the bedside cabinet, tiptoed out of the bedroom, and picked up her bra from where it had fallen at the top of the stairs. Her knickers were somewhere down by the front door. She crept silently downstairs so as not to wake Neville, who was sleeping the sleep of the deeply satiated.
She could hardly believe that she was now no longer a virgin; all those years of keeping her hand on her halfpenny had caused her to miss out on one of lifeâs rich pleasures. Her face burned with the residue of multiple satisfying orgasms. She was going to make up for lost time, but now it was 1.30am and she needed to get dressed; she would be late home and she had to face her motherâs anger.
She almost expected to see a police car in the road outside the house as she pulled up into the drive. However, she could see the house was all in darkness except for the flickering of the TV screen through the open curtains of the front room window. Was her mother still watching television? Sylvia usually went to bed at 9.30pm, and for her to still be awake at this hour of the morning was unusual to say the least.
Turning the key quietly in the lock, she let herself in, switched on the light in the hallway, and waited for the barrage of abuse to begin. There was nothing except for the sound of the TV programme. She popped her head around the door of the front room; her mother was fast asleep and sitting up in the armchair in her nightdress, mouth open and snoring.
Thelma washed and changed into her nightclothes, and then returned downstairs to turn off the TV and pull the curtains. She gently shook her motherâs shoulder.
âWhat are you still doing down here Mum? Arenât you coming to bed then?â
Sylvia opened her eyes, dazed and confused.
âWhen did you come in? I must have fallen asleep. Iâve been waiting up for you.â
âOh, I came home hours ago. Donât you remember?â
âNo, I donât remember at all.â She got stiffly to her feet and shuffled upstairs to bed, still half asleep.
Thelma breathed a sigh of relief as she climbed under the duvet. Then the shock hit her like a ton of lead: She had just had passionate, unbridled sex for the last two hours with a man who like her had been too overcome with emotion and the excitement of the moment to even think about using any contraception. She had not taken the pill before, having never had in the past even the hint of a sexual relationship.
Shit!
She was about two weeks into her monthly menstrual cycle.
She closed her eyes and remembered the feel of Nevilleâs body.
It would be ok; it was only the first time. She would take care in the future.
